artist statement
I have been choreographing for over a decade under various auspices. I have created as an independent artist, as an artistic director of my own company, Sara Hook Dances, as a collaborator with fellow artists, and as an educator in the university setting. My reputation and work have largely been built around my skills as a solo, comedic, character-driven artist. Over time my work has evolved into a unique form of social satire, not driven by any political agenda, but by a deep fascination with humanity's inconsistencies and contradictions.
Subject matter of my past work ranges from the excesses of pop-evangelical Christianity to the tumescent ambitions of talent show contestants, to the wild ravings of a Turkish soldier. Although my focus on character-based work makes me feel akin to the performance art genre, movement remains the centerpiece of the theatrical statement.
I maintain a devotion to formalist values, no matter how outrageous or imaginative the content premises might become. Movement and composed structure are the values I prioritize. This does not make my work traditional. This conviction gives me armored tactics with which to approach theatrical limitation and I believe gives my work longevity and substance.
