Team from Krannert to Participate in 2007 Prague Quadrennial

July 7, 2006
Prague - Organizers of the international Prague Quadrennial (PQ) have announced plans for the group's next major exhibition, with a team from Krannert Center for the Performing Arts scheduled to participate. The 11th PQ, with 58 participating countries, will be held June 14-24, 2007, at the Prague Exhibition Grounds in the Czech Republic.

Every four years, since 1963, the Czech Ministry of Culture has commissioned an international exhibition of theatre design and architecture known as the Prague Quadrennial. This powerhouse exhibit is considered by many to be the "olympics" of theatre design and architecture.

The exhibition:

  • is a world competitive showcase that presents the best creations from the participating countries.
  • is the only World Congress & Exhibition featuring performing art production design, technology, & theatre architecture.
  • serves as a meeting point for designers, directors, students, and the general public from every continent, creating an unprecedented opportunity for cross-cultural exchange of ideas.
  • has been a major factor in shaping the direction of world theatre, and hence world culture, for the past 30 years.

The USA exhibit at the PQ is sponsored by the United States Institute of Theatre Technology (USITT), a non-profit membership association of design, production, and technology professionals in the performing arts and entertainment industry. The Krannert Center at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign has been given a special opportunity to be involved with this international event involving over 50 countries from around the world. Students, faculty, and staff from the University of Illinois have already begun working on the project with designs in the preliminary stages. In addition to building these exhibits here in Urbana, a team will travel to Prague to install them and participate in this incredible international experience. After the PQ it is hoped that the team will be be able to provide ongoing staff support for an international tour.

SOME OF THE DESIGNERS REPRESENTED IN EXHIBIT:
Ming Cho Lee, John Conklin, Carrie Robbins, Julie Taymor, Paul Steinberg, David Zinn, George Tsypin, Jennifer Tipton, Nic Ularu, Madeleine Sobota, Michael Lincoln, Tom Kamm, Eric Stone
