In Person Jazz Threads Educational OpportunitiesSenior Scholars Program
Living Legends of Jazz Sam Reese, Instructor
March 3, 10, 17, 31 7:00 - 8:00 pm in the Private Dining Room Clark-Lindsey Village, Urbana This class will help you enjoy the music of four living legends of jazz - Clark Terry (trumpet), Marian McPartland (piano), Wayne Shorter (sax) and Toots Thielemans (harmonica). These well-known jazz performers are all in their 70's and 80's and are still pursuing impressive careers as performers, composers, band-leaders, and educators. The class sessions will include guided listening to exemplary pieces by these musicians, presentations about their personal and professional histories, and discussions about the rich connections between these artists and the past, present, and future of jazz in America. The class will prepare you to more fully enjoy a performance by Clark Terry and local jazz legend, Cecil Bridgewater, at the Krannert Center on March 7th. About Sam Reese: Dr. Sam Reese is Associate Professor of Music Education at the University of Illinois where he teaches music education methods and computer applications in music teaching. With over 33 years of music teaching experience at elementary, secondary and university levels, he is consistently recognized as an engaging teacher and presenter. He is a life-long jazz fan and has experience as a jazz performer and reviewer of jazz recordings.
