The first-ever 40 North | 88 West benefit event, Art on the Green, took place May 15, 2006 at the home of University of Illinois President and Mrs. B. Joseph White. Set inside a large garden tent adjacent to the President's home, it was a visually stunning and highly participatory event. Ignoring the persistent rain, a team of designers worked diligently to transform the space prior to Monday night, making Art on the Green a garden party like no other. From food and floral arrangements to lighting and graphics, these extraordinary artists succeeded in creating a spectacular environment that impressed guests from the moment they arrived.
Creating
In imagining this new event, the planning committee carefully considered how Art on the Green could engage guests in the mission of 40 North | 88 West (cultivating creativity in Champaign County). Creation Stations were then devised in order to cultivate creativity in all who entered the tent (click here to view a complete program). Guests enjoyed turning a set of blank canvases into a collective masterpiece, while others joined in the Tango fun on the crowded dance floor. Individually designed hats and jewelry were created and worn by guests, and many made contributions to a wild collaborative story. Complimentary cameras provided the chance for everyone to create their own keepsake of the event and to test their skills at photography. The Creation Stations were a rare opportunity for everyone under the tent to express the artist within.
Art on the Green was an inspiring event which 40 North hopes served as a reminder that art is within all of us and brings incredible value to our community. Want to cultivate creativity at your next gathering? Browse the 40 North | 88 West Resource Registry ... and invite an artist!

Community Canvases
One of the most popular art on the green Creation Stations was the Collective Unconscious, a set of blank canvases that provided guests an opportunity to paint with acrylics. Artists from all backgrounds collaborated on creating some brilliantly colorful masterworks - click here to view the finished pieces.
