A Call to Arts: An Open Critique

What: open public critiques for artists working in any discipline or media
 Where: locations around Champaign County

The popular series of free, community-based art critiques — presented by Krannert Art Museum in collaboration with 40 North | 88 West — returns for its 2010-2011 season. Visual, performance, and literary artists of all backgrounds are invited to come together to present work and participate in critiques held at locations throughout Champaign County.

Introductory in nature, A Call to Arts: An Open Critique provides a friendly, open space where artists can offer and receive challenging, insightful observations about new works, as well as being an exciting opportunity for interaction and networking with other artists.

A Call to Arts: An Open Critique is organized and moderated by Jenny Southlynn and is co-sponsored by Krannert Art Museum and 40 North | 88 West.

2010-2011 Schedule — A Call to Arts: An Open Critique

  • 7PM, TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 7, 2010: McGown Photography, 5801 W. Springfield Ave. Champaign. Guest/host artist photographer Lawerence McGown. Located on route 10 2.5 miles west of Duncan Road on the south side of the street.

  • 7PM, TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 2, 2010: Mahomet Public Library, 1702 E. Oak Street, corner of US 150 and Churchill Rd. Mahomet, IL. Guests: art journalists Melissa Mitchell and Melissa Merli

  • 7PM, TUESDAY, JANUARY 25, 2011: Figure One, 116 N. Walnut, Champaign. Guest: storyteller Camille Born.

  • 7PM, TUESDAY, MARCH 8, 2011: Art Coop, in their new location at Lincoln Square, Urbana. Guest artists: host/painter Susan Smith and photographer Peggy Shaw

An award-winning artist, arts-educator and writer, Jenny Southlynn is a long-time resident of Champaign County. A recipient of an MFA in Painting from the University of Illinois, Southlynn has taught art classes at the U of I and Illinois State and has written extensively on the arts for publications throughout the midwest. She is either founder or a founding member of Euterpe Music Network, Pamphlet Press, A Call to Arts, the Boneyard Arts Festival and 40 North | 88 West.
